Tuesday Tales and a Groovy New Year!

Happy December Tuesday Tales... Today, I return to my current WIP, a Game of Inches,
for my Fantasy Leagues series. This week our group writes to the word prompt, new year. opens so many possibilities, doesn't it? Let's peek in on when Lola and Marty first met. Happy New Year everyone!!
“C’mon, you’re gonna miss the ball drop.”  I threw a handful of popcorn in Lola’s direction.
“I will reiterate, back around Halloween when you asked if I wanted to watch the ball drop on New Year’s Eve, I believed you invited me to New York.”
“If I was gonna take you to New York for the New Year, we’d at least be sharing a bed.” I raised my eyebrows a few times.
“Aw, chex mix, Marty. Why’d you have to go and drag sex into our friendship?” Lola pulled a few fluffy popped kernels out of her curls. She settled in next to me on the couch. “Do you think Dick Clark is immortal?”
I studied the wrinkled image of the famous host with a crooked smile. On my sixty inch screen, the man looked every bit his age, whatever century he was in. “He could be a vampire.”
“Stop with the vampire scene, I can’t ever imagine any of that will be as famous as Harry Potter.”
“You might have a point there, kiddo. But, don’t be surprised if the supernatural trend is here to stay for a while.”
“Why can’t folks just fall in love without all the magic mumbo jumbo? Why does life have to be more anything? Am I not just as interesting as, let’s say, Buffy?”
“Now you’re messing with a legend. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was every boy’s dream show. Sarah Michelle Gellar, beautiful enchantress.”
“This conversation is going nowhere. We are talking about fictional people like they’re real. What do you want from life, Marty? Do you want to travel? Would you like to have a family?”
Lola stepped on sensitive ground when she started talking about me having kids. “I’ve been patient, just not sure what I want yet.” I can’t let her know how much I like her, we haven’t been talking that long. “I’m playing life by ear. What about you? Are you making any resolutions?”
Lola frowned, her eyes glazed over staring at the television. The little clock in the corner counted down the last five minutes of the calendar. “Sincerely, it's going to take more than a new year to fix my life.”

Depression Fecking Sucks, Not Just Hurts

I’ve decided to use my blog not only to writing, music, and other facets of entertainment, but, also to share my journey. I’ve had significant health problems for almost three years.

Thank you for listening, periodically, I will have a new installment chronicling my journey-

DEPRESSION CAN BE PAINFUL

Although this time of year brings a warm glow to the core of most folks, we have a subset of people struggling to even wake up on Christmas Day.

Depression/Anxiety/Bi-Polar/Fibromyalgia/MS/Sjogrens/Lupus/too many to list…
Some seek help, some give up, some learn to live with it. It's not an easy life, but, it's one worth living. Which is the hardest part of all to remember, especially when you're in physical and mental pain.

I had some of that pain yesterday....

I made the horrible mistake of miscalculating my Lyrica prescription  before it ran out. Taking the last pill on Monday morning, I called the script in to my amazing Kroger pharmacy. I arrived about 8:45 pm that night to pick it up.

They were out of stock.

It would be two days.

Shit.
Our fur family Mickey the Boston and Aggie the Heinz 57

So, they called into a neighboring Kroger pharmacy, but, I couldn’t pick it up until Tuesday. So, Monday night, I go to bed without my dose of Lyrica.

Lyrica leaves the body roughly 18 hours after a dose. (I suppose more or less depending on dosage, but, that’s not important right now, I’m no doctor.)

By Tuesday morning, it had been a full 24 hours plus with no Lyrica and I felt horrible. I had severe pruritis (itching body wide, especially in sensitive areas), disorientation, anxiety, nausea, aches, peripheral neuropathy pings, dizziness, sitting upright made me sick body wide. But, I had to work. I couldn’t get my script until after 9am when they opened.

I had to be to work earlier than that. So, I toughed it out all day until I got it around 7pm. By that time, missing two doses and way over 18 hours.

I’m not looking for sympathy, I’m using myself as an example. What if I had to live that way every day of my life? My nervous system was talking to me, giving me the what’s what about the state of my damaged nerve cells.

Some folks do this every day. At least the Lyrica shuts up the griping for the most part.

Depression and other mental illnesses work the same way. Damaged nerve receptors do not function properly leaving people hopeless, depressed, sad, angry, lonely, oh my goodness too many negatives to name.

It isn’t all in people’s heads.

Most folks don’t want to live that way. The body has been altered, they didn’t have a cognitive choice.

Advances in medical treatment have made some mental disorders as easy to control as a high blood pressure medication, high cholesterol medication, or in my case, damaged nerve endings. However, it takes courage for a person to admit they need help, especially with the still remaining stigmas surrounding mental illness.

What about the people who have suffered abuse or a similar traumatic incident. Let’s say the nerve cells aren’t damaged. The fact everything functions “normally” doesn’t mean the person can interpret the signals correctly. Or, the body goes into survivor mode. As reported by Time magazine- “To cope with overwhelming experiences of distress, the brain can alter patterns of signaling from the pathways involved, which can ultimately leave those regions underdeveloped from reduced input. The brain of a child who is raped, for example, may react by reducing the connectivity of the regions that were hurt.”

The brain survivor mode means a change in the signals, either reducing or increasing. Both affect the cognitive response of a person. Sometimes, a person needs support, understanding, and yes, patience. No change happens overnight, but, it can get better. The aching can diminish, and while it may not go completely away, you can learn how to manage the pain for a quality life.

This season, I’m saying Merry Christmas to every person I see. I choose to make the most of the life I’m rebuilding, one day at a time.

You can too. You can rebuild. You are strong, courageous, and worth it. You MATTER.

I hope all readers take an opportunity to reach out to someone in need, not just over the next week, but, every day of 2015.

I will be cognizant of my surroundings, and do what I can to help.

Will you make that same pledge?

Making a Difference - Eradicate MS

I try to host a health related post each week in The Locker. I like to share my experiences in the hopes of helping someone else. I've decided to make a little turn and have a guest host for the next few weeks.

My friend Brian is a beast. He cycles more miles in a year than I probably drive in my car. He has a passion for health, and shares an equal passion to eradicate MS. Please be kind to Brian and give him a warm welcome.

Hugs-

As I celebrate Thanksgiving, I am reminded of the many things I am thankful.  A loving wife, a roof over my head, food on the table, a good job, and many wonderful friends and family.  It’s funny how the one thing I tended to forget to be thankful, is the one thing I took for granted…good health.  In my association with the National MS Society, I have met many wonderful people who live with his disease.  While many may be quick say they would rather not have MS, they are still thankful for the disease, as it has shown them how precious, not only their health is, but life in general.  Further, they are genuinely thankful for each, and every, person who bikes, walks or runs through a mud-laden course in order to find a cure for MS.  Through these endeavors, strangers become friends as we all unite to end MS forever.

Finally, I am thankful for everyone who has made a donation that benefits the National MS Society.  Without your generosity, the great strides that have already been made, and the ones yet to come, would not have been possible.

Please visit my page at http://main.nationalmssociety.org/goto/Brian2015 to make a donation.  Thank you.

"Right from the beginning there was a lot going on at once. However, the story did eventually pull me in and I did end up falling in love with the characters, especially Lola and Marty. I even cried at one point.

“I won’t say it doesn’t hurt, but, I will tell you it’s ok.”

By the end of the book I found myself wanting to read more, something I did not expect when beginning the book. I am interested to see how everyone’s story evolves during the next book in the series. And, there was one line that I will take with me…

“Let me say that again, if you remain an option, you will never become a priority.”

Tuesday Tales - I'm a Survivor

Happy December Tuesday Tales... Today, I return to my current WIP, a Game of Inches,
for my Fantasy Leagues series. This week our group writes to the following word prompt, dance. Will Sharlyn survive?
“When I made this decision, I didn’t have to think. I moved into action mode and wanted to get it done. Now, I wonder, will I ever dance at my sister’s wedding? Will I even be invited?”
“Marty, you’re an incredible man, with a huge heart. I’m only sorry I didn’t see it sooner. I suppose I did, I just pretended it was all a lie.”
I was so torn, I still loved Lola, but, I couldn’t forget what she did. Every time I see Sharlyn, I see Lola. The beautiful younger version, full of the goodness and kindness Lola never had. I knew it from the beginning, but, I’d hope she would change.
People don’t change. “Lola, if I’m lucky enough to be a part of Sharlyn’s life, I don’t know how to do it and avoid you. It kills me so much inside, wanting you so much, loving you so much. I don’ t know how to let go, I long for you down to my soul. You could be the death of me.” Why the hell did I want to say these things? Something about the possibility of death makes people say the words locked within their heart. Lola was locked within my heart, and I was merely a prisoner in hers.
“We have to think Sharlyn will pull through this. She has to. I won’t accept anything less.”
A knock on the door interrupted anymore drivel I would spout to Lola. It didn’t do any good.
“So, Marty, how are you today?” The doctor eyed Lola. I don’t believe a person alive could ignore her.
“I’m okay, still sore, but, I’m not complaining.”
“You still have a fever, we will have to keep you until we make sure the infection is gone.”
“I understand, doc, it is what it is.” I had to ask, I could only hope he’d  tell me. “How is Sharlyn?”
The doctor sighed, flipping through a clipboard. “She’s fighting, that girl is a fighter for sure. I can’t say much more.”
Dear Lord, Sharlyn may have more of Lola’s best than I ever realized. A fighter. Just like her momma.

A sobering stat I learned while attending the National MS Leadership conference in Ft. Worth, TX.  More than 50% of MS patients will develop a progressive form of the disease, which can lead to diminished motor functions robbing the patient of the ability to walk, or even hold utensils to eat.  While there are FDA approved modifying drugs to treat relapsing forms of MS, there are still no treatments for progressive forms.  Money raised thru events, such as BikeMS, are currently funding research to treat progressive MS, which may lead to a cure.  Please join me as I ride for those who can’t.  Please visit my page at http://main.nationalmssociety.org/goto/Brian2015 to make a donation.  Thank you.

Tuesday Tales - It's a Whiteout...Maybe

Happy December Tuesday Tales... Today, I return to my current WIP, a Game of Inches,
for my Fantasy Leagues series. This week our group writes to the following beautiful picture prompt. Will Lola ever find peace? Just 300 words for this captivating image. Enjoy

“I wasn’t always a slutty alcoholic, right?”
“Those things, they…they weren’t your fault. Besides, those do not make who you are, just some choices you made. Negativity or positivity isn’t intrinsic, neither defines us.”
Who the hell made mother some existentialist? “Mamma, I made choices. I can’t blame an evil twin.”
“You didn’t do bad things on purpose.”
“Stop making excuses for me. I’m trying to work the steps. I can’t do it with blinders on. I accept responsibility.”
“No!”
“You don’t know how much this hurts if you don’t accept my amends, accept my sins. I need this from you.”
Laverne gripped her purse tightly in her lap, as if it was a life preserver. “Can we talk?”
“It’s what we’re doing.”
“I failed you. I failed you in the worst way, but, I took care of it.”
“I forgive you about all the puzzles, dissing my business, and meddling in my life.”
“Speaking of puzzles…” Mom pulled a tray up off the floor. It looked like something she’d use for breakfast in bed. “Look what I’ve been working on for you. I know how much you love snow.”

“Wow, Mom, I can't believe this image is only a puzzle. This looks like somewhere we should move.  I want to get away, go somewhere I don’t know anyone. I’m starting to resent my life, shit, I’ve resented it since I can remember.” The hissing fissure deep inside holding me together started to quake. I wanted to blow up, disintegrate, go somewhere I’d never hurt anyone else again. My own daughter was dying, I remembered her kicking me from inside. I thought I had horrible gas. Now, the fissure sometimes spewed hot reminders through my guts. The playful kicking of my infant became twisting, cramping, reminders of the emptiness my daughter filled before I gave her away. I just gave her away like a discarded toy. I walked away from her never looking back. “Momma, make the pain go away.”

Executing a Raid on Tuesday Tales!

Happy Fall Tuesday Tales... Today, I return to my current WIP, a Game of Inches, for my Fantasy Leagues series. This week our group writes to the word prompt raid. What kind of raid are we talking about? You'll just have to keep reading.

CYBER MONDAY SPECIAL! Book One of the Fantasy Leagues is now available. You can get a hint from there. Free on Smashwords!

“When planning a verbal raid, you better come prepared with enough emotional ammunition.” Lola walked the floor, occasionally chewing her thumbnails.
“You told me chewing my nails was a disgusting habit.”
“I don’t give a shit, I have so many disgusting habits, one more isn’t going to hurt anything today.” She yelled, flinging her arms into the air.
“You look like shit, again. Have you been drinking?”
“No, absolutely not, I haven’t touched a drop. But, thank you for reminding me. The roar in my brain wasn’t loud enough to get the point across.”
“What kind of verbal raid are you talking about?”
“I need to talk to the old codger’s cold fish wife. Surely there’s a shriveled up reminder of a heart underneath her scales.”
“Do you really know Mrs. McDonald? Is she so horrible?”
“Really, Danika? Come on, how about a little support. There’s a girl dying and she won’t help.” Lola’s hands kept shaking, she was going through severe tremors. Although my imagination could be getting away from me, the tremors had gotten worse since I arrived
“How do you know Marty even approached her?” Nothing Lola told me indicated she had one ounce of proof Marty even told his mother.
Lola’s face turned beet red, staining all the way to her ears and down her neck. “He’s too good of a man not to ask. He’s too good of a man for me.” She slumped to the floor and began giggling.
“Lola! Lola!” Well, hell, this detox was worse than I thought. While drinking alcohol could set off her irrational behavior, the more I observed her, the more convinced I became she was withdrawing. She needed a hospital right away. “Lola, we are going to the hospital.”
“You’re coming to take us away…” She shrieked before convulsing. She flipped and flopped around on the floor. I moved furniture and other obstructions out of the way so she wouldn’t hurt herself. I dialed 911. “You gotta come quickly. We have a female, late thirties in the middle of alcohol withdrawal. She is now convulsing.” I’m a doctor, but, the ambulance couldn’t get here fast enough for me.

Re-Gifting

I’ve decided to use my blog not only to writing, music, and other facets of entertainment, but, also to share my journey. I’ve had significant health problems for almost three years.

Thank you for listening, periodically, I will have a new installment chronicling my journey- ***

***we will return to Just Out of My Grasp with a special guest blogger next week.

Sexy Holiday Read from Yours Truly
RE-GIFTING, REALLY?

Learn how to be thankful…

Yes, I said it right, sometimes we have to relearn how to be thankful. I’m completely spoiled, as is most people around me, yet, I still complain about money. I think it’s just selfishness. I need to learn about being truly grateful 365 24/7. Count your blessings every day.

Before I begin, happy happy 30th birthday to my baby brother, Samuel. Happy happy 26th birthday to my oldest baby, Aaron. Happy Happy 27th birthday to my bonus daughter, Ashley. Three most amazing blessings in my life.

Now, on to the fun stuff- Re-Gifting

Re-Gifting – “The act of taking a gift that has been received and giving it to somebody else, sometimes in the guise of a new gift.” Thank you Wikipedia

DISCLAIMER- the holidays are about being together, love, family, friendship, and the feeling of joy we may not always feel the other times of the year. The magic from October through January makes me smile. If your budget is stretched to capacity, please consider alternatives for those folks you absolutely must show your love and caring for. Think about offering babysitting for one date night, give them a cherished book you own, give them something homemade, that sort of thing. I guarantee you whoever receives your present will know it’s absolutely, 100% from the heart. My re-gifting blog post has nothing to do with shaming or berating anyone.

My Gma and her Dirty Santa Moose Wine Bottle Holder Gift
Most of us have had the opportunity to receive the “gift with purchase” around the holiday season. The .99 incentive that inspires us to drop one hundred times that much at the cosmetics counter. (raising my hand) We begin to tick off the names on our Christmas gift list and wonder if this free gift would take care of one less gift to purchase.

Well, as we say in Texas and Oklahoma, hold your horses!

I’m not saying it’s completely inappropriate, I’ve re-gifted.

There, I said it.

ONE- It’s no less than a fine art to master. When I buy presents for people, I know who they are, I buy with a sentimental streak, giving them something meaningful just for them. When someone receives a present from me, it’s from the heart. So, it isn’t always the free gift finds a home elsewhere. Sometimes, it ends up in my stocking, lets the husband do less work. Whatev.

Also, if you have a list including savvy shoppers such as yourself, chances are they’ve also seen the offer, shoot, they may have one contemplating giving it to you. Wouldn’t that be a hoot? Exchanging the same free gift. At least neither of you should get offended. (this totally has to go in a future book)

My advice is to make sure the person you’re giving the gift would not have seen the free ad offer/gift with purchase offer. It’s honestly offensive. I’d rather not exchange gifts with folks if that’s their idea. Shoot, bake me some dang chocolate chip cookies, I’ll love you forever. See highlight ONE

TWO- The thought is, for whatever reason, you’ve established this precedent to exchange gifts with people, if you have the $100 to plunk down on the face cream or perfume set, take a $10, go to Ross and buy your recipient something new.

IF and ONLY IF, the recipient would have NO idea this was a free gift with purchase, you’re probably in the clear. However, if you’re just being cheap for the sake of being cheap, see the above paragraph- spring for something new intended for the person. See highlight TWO

Gift cards are perfect for re-gifting. The recipient would have no idea. Unless you re-gift your stay at home mom friend who crochets a Bass Pro Gift Card, you’d blow your cover. The jig would be up. Instead, go TO Bass Pro and pick up a nice blanket, candy, blah blah blah, there’s more to Bass Pro than fishing. Trust me.

Popping some tags at the thrift shop. This is tricky territory. Again, if you’re really on a budget, and I say this with 100% sincerity because I’ve been there. Please don’t buy me, or your friends, anything. Save your money for you. Not being snarky this time, I’m saying if you’re on a very tight budget, give something homemade or offer babysitting for free for date night, something you can do without spending money. These holidays are about giving from the heart.

I’ve popped some tags at the thrift shop and gifted them. Heck ya. As long as the item looked new, no big deal, especially if it “fit” the person.

From my perspective, we put way too much emphasis on the commercialism of any big yearly event. Since when the hell did a sale on washing machines actually celebrate Veteran’s Day or Columbus Day? What is that day REALLY about?

i.e. BLACK FRIDAY – UGH, been there done that. But, I absolutely will NOT shop on Thanksgiving. No, hubby, you’ll have to go alone. J

In my house we celebrate Christmas. I spend way more on the kids than I should. I love giving presents. I love to see the joy on their faces, but, I’m just as guilty as the next one that I should stop worrying about the dollar figure and more about tugging the right heart strings.

Happy Thanksgiving! and happy SAFE shopping! (you might need to get a safe word...)

Tuesday Tales are Stark Today....guess who's talking

Happy Fall Tuesday Tales... Today, I return to my current WIP, a Game of Inches, for my Fantasy Leagues series. This week we write to the word prompt stark. I just can't tell you who's talking! It gives too much away. Book One of the Fantasy Leagues is now available. You can get a hint from there. First 25% free for download!

"She is a stark reminder of what my life could have been. Sharlyn can't die, she's barely had a chance to live.” She paused, her body stiffened and she looked down. "Maybe she might even want a chance to get to know me."

"I'm sorry Sharlyn is going through this. I never thought about wanting children. I've always been too busy. Sometimes I think an extension of me would be more of a curse than a blessing I'd put on a child."

"You'd be a wonderful mother, with your gifts, adventurous nature, and huge heart. I've witnessed it. Your dogged determination to make life better for the people around you. More kids need that from a parent."

"You know, you could have kids of your own. Sharlyn isn't the only one."

"I've got so many flaws and wrinkles in my life, I"m not sure I can ever iron them out to be suitable for raising a family. But, don't think the daydream doesn't visit me from time to time."

Tuesday Tales Will Telling the Truth Doom Love?

Happy Fall Tuesday Tales... Today, I return to my current WIP, a Game of Inches, for my Fantasy Leagues series. This week we write to the beautiful picture prompt below. Three hundred words...what can I set up for you? Will Lola tell Marty the truth?

“I love living here. I had to move far enough away the memories of you couldn’t haunt me.”
“A breathtaking view.”
I imagined his place in the summertime, when the waxy leaves shone a bright green, glistening from the reflections off the water. I imagined what it would look like covered in snow, quietly falling with a fire roaring in the living room. I imagined pulling a sheet of freshly baked cookies out of the oven, setting them on the counter to cool. I imagined everything in sixty long seconds I was doomed to never have.
Marty moved cautiously, remaining behind the sofa. Apparently, an unnecessarily heavy sleigh sofa would keep me away. He completely underestimated my ninja skills. “Lola, I’m shocked you visited me. Can you please just get it out of the way? You said you need my help.”
My brain reminded my libido we had a serious discussion to undertake. Suddenly, I was glad the couch was between us. He might slap me if I stood too close. “It’s difficult to explain. It’s me that needs help, but, I’m asking as more of a favor for someone else.”
“Shit, Lola, do you have a friend who wants to meet me and you are the go between? This has a sweaty gym socks and chalkboard smell to it.”
“I know I sound like some high school drama queen.”
“If you know it isn’t appealing, why do you do it? We aren’t in high school. You and I have done things I hope high school girls don’t do.”

Dear Lord, please be with me. This will be tougher than I imagined. He has no clue I learned some of my best moves while still in high school. “I’m going to tell you some things about me you won’t like.”

Today Beautiful Special Guest Author Flossie Benton Rogers!! and giveaway!

Today in The Locker I have the amazing, kind, and talented Flossie Benton Rogers.
She stopped by with a little snippet about her new release. Please check her out and have a chance to win her latest book!

Thank you for featuring Lord of Fire today, Davee! I’m thrilled to be here and to offer an exciting GIVEAWAY. Since this is the 5th Wytchfae book, I thought we’d start by asking the hero to share five of his favorite things.

Gabriel Hawk:
Favorite Drink – “Strong coffee with a dram of fine Irish whiskey tossed in. It goes down even smoother when my delectable Wytchfae is sitting across the kitchen table from me, tantalizing me with those sleepy golden eyes of hers.”

Favorite Pastime – “You’re kidding, right? What do you think I like to do with a woman like Garnet McAnna in my arms?”

Favorite Color – “Red, as in blood red. Demons, by the way, do not bleed red.”

Favorite Place – “Not the Underworld, and damn sure not that hell hole of a club called Slice. I like the privacy of my cabin in the woods with no one around but my Wytchfae.”

Favorite Dessert – *wicked leer* “Cheesecake, followed by Garnet, Garnet, and more Garnet.”

Lord of Fire – Wytchfae 5

Blurb: When The Hawk meets his Wytchfae, the result is spontaneous combustion.

Garnet McAnna chases the demon responsible for attacking and enslaving innocent fae familiars. She never expected to run headlong into a mesmerizing stranger known as The Hawk. Nor did she anticipate the way his masculine power kindles a womanly flame within her.

Exiled from an elite warrior's brigade, Lord of Fire Gabriel Hawk guards his heart and his solitude. He wants nothing to do with the world of men or the realm of fae. Then a beautiful Wytchfae bursts into his life, stirring desire and sparking need. Garnet is on a dangerous mission, and he can't let her face the evil alone. What else can he do but fight beside her? When she disappears, he raises hell to find her. Will he be too late? Will darkness conquer this couple or will love burn their souls into one?

First Line Teaser: She’d catch the demon tonight if it killed her.

Memorable Quote: “Garnet McAnna, you’re the hottest woman in thirteen worlds.”

Excerpt:
Garnet dimpled as morning’s first whispered glow cast an incandescent gleam on their half-naked flesh. Lying on their sides, bodies touching, an electrical current seemed to bolt back and forth between them. Reaching out, she raked a hand through The Hawk’s blue-black hair. She loved the sight of it spread out on the pillow and its silken texture in her fingers. The hard planes of his chest enticed her to seek him there as well.

One corner of his mouth tilted into a smile. “Brazen woman.”

No Way November....Tuesday Tales

Happy Tuesday and welcome to The Locker.

Today, I move to book two of my current WIP, A Game of Inches, for my Fantasy Leagues series. This week we write, to the word prompt "flower".

“Irony huh? I also went to see my mom. She is now hoarding jigsaw puzzles. However, we came to a mutual understanding, so, I’m looking past all the pieces scattered around in her house. They give her a feeling of completion not normally occurring in her reality. I get it.”
“Only with you could I be so dumbfounded.”
“You could never be dumb, Eugene, it’s why I hired you.”
“A figure of speech, I intended dumbfounded as a figure of speech.”
“So, here’s the deal. I will be really out of commission for a few weeks. I have a legit reason. I don’t trust anyone else to run Fantasy Leagues. Will you please stay with me to see this through and start basketball?”
Silence.
“Please?”
“Lola, just when I think I can walk away from you, both middle fingers standing proudly, you throw in a curve ball.”
“You’re helping me become a better person. I don’t know what I’d do without you. You’re my rock.” I heaped on the praise, attempting to bring humor to an otherwise uncomfortable conversation.
“Callipygian.”
“You’re using your safe word again.”
“Stop with the bullshit.”
“Does that mean you’ll consider helping me?”
“Let me know what the tests reveal. I already told you I’d finish football. I’ll make a decision about basketball after I know what you’re plans are for medical leave.”
“I appreciate you so much…”
“Callipygian. Stop with the gushing. I hate it.”
“Fine, so, guess this conversation is over?”
“One thing. What happens if you aren’t a match? What about her biological father?”
“Cali-pie-gee-ann…I’m throwing your safe word back at you.”
****
Maybe I’m a horrible friend for hanging up on Lola, I chose to call it tough love. What did she expect, I’d give her a flower? She had no right to worry all of us the way she did then bounce back expecting everything to be all normal. I wasn’t jealous, I was concerned. Huge difference.
The feeling of dread lifted immediately when I heard her voice. Anger followed suit when I found out she hadn’t been abducted. Knowing she had access to contact me pissed me off, she also hurt my heart. Did she not care enough to check in with me? I suppose I lost rank in the realm of importance. She told me in the beginning not to expect much, I assumed we got past her hesitations.
I paced the floor determined not to call her back. I hung up for a reason. I stared at my phone, willing her to reach out…apologize. Maybe she would show up at my door, draw me in close, whisper amends into my ear. Her soft silky hair would brush my face, comforting me. I couldn’t deny how much I wanted to kiss her again. Her soft lips and silken tongue with the tentative probing. Not stiff and prodding like some awkward man kiss.
I was in lust with Lola, she mesmerized me.
She also deserted me.
Finn ran away from me.
My phone rang, and my heart skipped two beats. I would take either one of them right now. My fragile confidence tank needed a refill. Afraid to look, I cautiously turned my phone over. Great.
“Hi mom, what’s up?”
“Dr. Parker, I wonder if you are free for a wild evening of moonlighting work?”
“I guess so.”
“Why do you sound so down? Are you sick, tired, overworked?”
“I’m good, just moody I suppose. Late blooming PMS is a bitch.”
“Dust yourself off, nothing like bloodstains to take your mind off PMS. If anything always remember, you are better off than the person we clean up after.”
“Mom, you have such a twisted way of looking at humanity.”
“My twisted view pays the bills. The inevitable keeps me in business. Can you be ready to go in twenty minutes?”
“Sure, come get me.”

"Finding Love and Bigfoot" is a fun, sweet romance. There's a lovely level of humour, which had me giggling and thoroughly enjoying the read. Following the characters whom we were introduced to in book one, "Finding Love under a Rock", it was enjoyable journeying with them once again." review by Bex N' Books
