Tuesday Tales - Why Are You So Pale?

Ahoy Fellow Fathomers! Welcome to Tuesday Tales. I introduce you to a  WIP I have going under my sweet pseudonym Allee Mae. It's the 3rd in my YA paranormal romance series the Critter Getters. This book is entitled Finding Love in a Black Lagoon. Our prompt today is the word "pale".  Pale has many connotations, and I'm sure you'll find a variety of uses with our Tuesday Tales bloggers.

“This is all so much to let out in one afternoon. Can we call time out and pick this conversation up again later?” Pearl sniffled, dry tears wouldn’t fall, she’d cried too much in the past.

“Yes, we can.” Owen held onto Pearl’s shoulders, but, situated her in front of him. He looked into her eyes, her face pale, almost sallow. “Don’t be afraid to talk to me. I think we both have heavy demons to unload. I’d say we broke enough ice for one sitting.”

“Thank you. Owen, you’re a good man. I’m glad I met you.”

“I want you to spend the rest of the week with us. Our investigations are turning up squat lately, so, this has been more a vacation than an investigation.”

“That’s another thing, Owen. You know, the investigation.” Pearl hesitated and shrugged her shoulders. “The only time that creature’s been around is when I was there.”

“Hmm, that’s crazy. I don’t think we knew that before.”

“Well, I never said anything and didn’t really tell anybody before now.”

“Are you absolutely sure this thing doesn’t come around any other time?” Owen grabbed Pearl’s hand and they started walking again up the path.

“I suppose it could come out other times, but, then nobody else has seen it.”

“Can we talk to those guys that were there? You know the ones who got away?”

Pearl wrinkled her nose. “Wouldn’t do you any good to talk to those jerks, they won’t tell you anything new.”

“Were they after you, Pearl?”

Pearl gritted her teeth and her palm became sweaty in Owen’s secure hold. “Yes.”

Inquisitive conversation became precarious territory for Owen. Something in this situation suddenly felt dark and evil. “Did you see that guy get attacked?”

Pearl whispered, “Yes.”

“The police talked to you though, right? I mean you were part of the questioning?”

“Yes, I was. They asked me everything under the sun and kept me at the police station for hours. I suppose they thought I could give them a lead or something. But, I’ll tell you like I told them. I don’t know what came up out of that water, but, something did.”

I'm glad to see that Pearl is starting to open to Owen. Wonder what came up out of the swamp.

Great scene! Hmmm, I`m wondering exactly what came out of the water as well.

Love that Pearl is opening up and how Owen is supporting her and not scaring her by judging anything...just pure curiosity. Loving the development of these two.
I love the spooky mix of love and eerieness -- if that's a word. I got goosebumps and now I need ti know about the attack and what's living under the water. And I want them to connect. Great story, Davee.

I like seeing how they're getting closer to each other with each scene.

What a spooky close to that scene. I hope she's opening up to the right guy.
