Movie Review - A Little Bit of Heaven - from 2011

Image
Review  How did I miss this one!?           A Little Bit of Heaven Wikipedia for Spoilers It’s hard for me to watch movies about death. Maybe it’s my discomfort with the whole inevitability, my mid-life phase, and chronic illness twisting my emotions into denial. Our family lost a young father this summer, and the weight of sadness hasn’t lifted much for his young widow and their kiddos. But, I’m gonna say, I like how this movie addresses the subject of death, and how it affects a young person. Most critics hated this movie for the same reasons I loved it. You cannot put emotions into a box and expect every single person to react the same way in serious situations. There is no gold standard for receiving news of a terminal illness. That’s why I appreciated the message this movie gives to the audience through to the end. I cried like a big old baby for probably 30 of this productions’ 107 minutes. Almost half. I...

Tuesday Tales and a Little Pill

Image
Ahoy Fellow Fathomers! It's time for Tuesday Tales. A group of writers gather together and give our interpretation of a specific word prompt each week. Once per month, we even write to an image.  You never know what you might encounter when you get inside our minds. This week our group writes to the word- pill .    This will be an excerpt f ro m Twister Fate, my new WIP for a new romance contemporary. Enjoy!~ Strolling into the kitchen, I wondered if she had a guilty conscience. “What’s up?” Not missing a beat, she continued chopping vegetables, throwing a question back at me. “Did you have a nice visit with Violet?” “More than just nice, it was enlightening. She was so forthcoming about how you called Conner to come see me after I got home. Really? Why did you do that? What made you do such a thing?” That made her stop chopping. “I was worried about you. I knew he was a huge support to you in the hospital. Why do you think I didn...

Tuesday Tales, From the Hip

Ahoy Fellow Fathomers! This week our group writes to the diverse word- hip .    This will be an excerpt f ro m Twister Fate, a new WIP for a new romance contemporary. “I heard them, you know, the rescue team – Billy included.” I looked at Cameron sitting, waiting patiently for my next words. I wasn’t sure I wanted to go any further. When I didn’t speak, he smiled this get out of jail free card, silent proof he wasn’t forcing me to keep talking. Closing my eyes, I released this painful gale hiding behind a dam of shame. “I wanted to tell him to stop, to wait, I was okay. He didn’t need to put himself in further danger, we would be there till it was safe. I’d tripped on something stupid, I fell in the dark, somehow my flashlight went out.” I remembered the throbbing. The pain shot through my hip, shattering my consciousness. Filling with tears, Cameron’s eyes widened slightly before he closed them again. Clutching my hand, a small gesture meant to...

Tuesday Tales - The Sweet Scent of....Blood?

Image
Ahoy Fellow Fathomers! For this week's Tuesday Tales, we are writing to the word prompt, "Sweet". Please see another excerpt from my paranormal thriller, Jerky.   “I’ve seen the near impossible happen right before my eyes so you know I believe you Jo, and it’s hard to imagine some mortal human was capable of something like this.” Wylder pointed to the scene below them. “I’m going to make my way down there, just in case someone is hurt.” “I’ll follow you, just be careful, I don’t trust this rickety walkway.” Joelle slid both arms into the backpack straps of her crime scene go-bag. Wylder tentatively pressed with increasing weight before he finally took each step. The wood groaned and creaked, almost speaking the horrors of the room. A musty odor wafted from the dank wood railing to which they clung with gloved hands. The sweet, metal scent of blood lingered in the heavy air. Joelle closed her mouth tightly, breathing exclusively through her nose to keep from tasti...

Tuesday Tales - Railing Into Hell

Image
Hello Fellow Fathomers and welcome to Tuesday Tales. Each week our group gets together and writes to a word prompt or picture prompt. You never know what you might come across but, it's sure to entertain you. This week our word prompt is "railing" and I went with a Halloween theme. This will be from Book Two of the Blue Ink series entitled, "Jerky". I hope you enjoy... "Holding onto the railing for support, Joelle’s stomach lurched. The macabre scene in the room below her tested the very limits of humanity. Wylder reached his hand around her waist to steady her uneasy stance. “I need to call for back-up, are you going to be okay?” “Dear God, just when I think I’ve seen it all, something even worse happens.” She gagged at the end of her sentence. The smell of decay and chemicals finally wafted up to her sensitive nostrils. Wylder reached for his cell phone with one hand and pressed a speed dial button. “I’m here, Jo, and you can go outside anyti...
