Enjoy!~ Owen sat beside the waning fire, staring into the glowing embers. Memories invaded his thoughts, turning this otherwise peaceful evening disturbing. He hadn’t talked to his former girlfriend, Morgan, for about six weeks. He had known Morgan as long as he’d known Caleb, since they were just out of the toddler stage. She became his best friend—he never thought of her as a girl until her beauty blossomed from behind the dirt on her cheeks and under her fingernails. The three of them were like peas in a pod, knowing each other’s secrets, even the devastating ones. Owen’s stomach churned while his chest burned. Tears threatened and h...

Tuesday Tales and Seeing Ghosts

Ahoy Fellow Fathomers! It's time for Tuesday Tales. A group of writers gather together and give our interpretation of a specific word prompt each week. This week the word prompt is "ghost". You never know what you might encounter when you get inside our minds.  This will be an excerpt f ro m my new yet-to-be-named WIP. Enjoy!~ Nausea overwhelmed him, coming in consistent waves. He wretched until his belly emptied, then could only produce dry heaves. He curled tighter, trying to comfort his roiling stomach, which created pain elsewhere. He tried to recall what he was doing there, but thinking hurt his head with a sharp, itchy prickling. Yet flashes of faces assaulted his memory—Caleb, Morgan, old childhood friends, his mother, finally his little brother. The pain hurt his heart as much as the physical wounds. He tried dismally to make it stop. He couldn’t reach any of them, his voice seemed muted. The twilight of his reality kept him from kno...

Tuesday Tales and Eating Seeds

Ahoy Fellow Fathomers! It's time for Tuesday Tales. A group of writers gather together and give our interpretation of a specific word prompt each week. This week the word prompt is "seed". You never know what you might encounter when you get inside our minds.  This will be an excerpt f ro m my new yet-to-be-named WIP. Enjoy!~ The sun warmed the truck and the travelers, creating a lazy atmosphere. They finally turned the radio on, seeking new stations as they left one tower band when the incessant static drowned out the music. They stopped occasionally to stretch their legs and get refreshment. Caleb insisted on sunflower seeds and Dr. Pepper to keep him alert while the rest of them chose random boredom foods. He and Owen exchanged turns driving. The late afternoon sun finally dipped low enough to signal supper. Yet, they continued on, with promises of home cooking from Mr. Richard upon their arrival. At the end of the day, deep in south...

Tuesday Tales and Healing Waters

Image
Ahoy Fellow Fathomers! It's time for Tuesday Tales. A group of writers gather together and give our interpretation of a specific word prompt each week. However, once per month, we write to an image. This week it's the picture prompt. You never know what you might encounter when you get inside our minds.  This will be an excerpt f ro m my new yet-to-be-named WIP. Enjoy!~ The moss-covered cypress trees framed the invisible lake. She considered it invisible because she knew where to go to hide away from the throngs of day to day life. Simple nature calmed her soul.   Tangles of aquatic plants flourished in the natural body of water. The only natural large lake in Texas. Also famed as the largest natural lake in the South, the lake had a mystical reputation. People came to get lost, to get away from hectic life of nosy, invasive civilization. She was there to get lost, to get far away from the not only the things happening in her life, but,...

Tuesday Tales and a Staple

Ahoy Fellow Fathomers! It's time for Tuesday Tales. A group of writers gather together and give our interpretation of a specific word prompt each week. Once per month, we even write to an image.  You never know what you might encounter when you get inside our minds. This week our group writes to the word- staple .    This will be an excerpt f ro m my new WIP for a new romance contemporary, What the Storm Didn't Take. Enjoy!~   At least I wouldn’t interfere from home. I was on a different playing level when the hospital discharged me. Now, I was on Sheila’s turf and was best not to infringe. I certainly didn’t want to give the wrong impression. But, I really missed him. I wondered how life was in Dallas for his clinical assignment. Who was I kidding? I wanted to know how he handled the long-distance relationship with Sheila. Was it working out? Was he preparing to make the final move out East? It wasn’t any of my busin...

This week our group writes to the word-mother.    This will be an excerpt f ro m my new WIP for a new romance contemporary, What the Storm Didn't Take. Enjoy!~ My mother only wanted to help. However, I needed to read this one in private. May is an incredible month every year not just because it's Mother's Day but it's your birthday and I know that I complain every year about what to get you and not knowing what to buy because you seem to have everything but the truth is I've always enjoyed thinking about what I can give you that would be as unique and special as you are thankfully no matter what I do you never complain you never returned it and you've always acted lik...

Tuesday Tales and a Good Cry, (is there such a thing)

Ahoy Fellow Fathomers! It's time for Tuesday Tales. A group of writers gather together and give our interpretation of a specific word prompt each week. Once per month, we even write to an image.  You never know what you might encounter when you get inside our minds. This week our group writes to the word- cry .    This will be an excerpt f ro m my new WIP for a new romance contemporary, What the Storm Didn't Take. Enjoy!~ Mom carefully studied my expression, as if she really was seeing me- the grown-up me. “Sweetie, you’ve been through so much more than some people twice your age have dealt with. I’m so proud of you for how you take each day. I know it’s not easy.” Cocking her head to the side, she elaborated. “Saying it’s not easy is a dramatic understatement. I’m not sure I have the words to describe how I’ve observed your life the past several months.” “I appreciate you, mom. I still cry, and I’m not sure I’ll ever get o...

Tuesday Tales and What About Life

Once per month, we even write to an image.  You never know what you might encounter when you get inside our minds. This week our group writes to the word- life .    This will be an excerpt f ro m my new WIP for a new romance contemporary, What the Storm Didn't Take. Enjoy!~ “I’m embarrassed even admitting to you I don’t see mom enough.” “We all let life get in the way. I’m not judging you, only offering a small reminder.” I saw my husband every day before he died. I was always thankful I took a local job close to home that didn’t monopolize my day the way some careers would have. Standing, he placed the little plastic characters on my table. “I’m gonna leave these with you. I thought they might bring a little smile, if anything. I’ve got my normal rounds, but, I’ll check in this ...

Tuesday Tales - But For a Tree

Ahoy Fellow Fathomers! It's time for Tuesday Tales. A group of writers gather together and give our interpretation of a specific word prompt each week. Once per month, we even write to an image.  You never know what you might encounter when you get inside our minds. This week our group writes to the word- tree.    This will be an excerpt f ro m my new WIP for a new romance contemporary, What the Storm Didn't Take. Enjoy!~ I bought out every fruit tree the local nursery had in stock. I’m sure I made the owners day with the amount of money I spent. Today, money was no object standing in the way of what I wanted to do. A tree was the perfect memorial- strong, sturdy, with deep roots holding fast as the important base. Conner helped me load them all in my dad’s truck. “Are we going very far?” Eyeing the full bed, he appeared to guage the success rate of getting everything to the site. “We aren’t going far at all. I’ll drive slowly wi...

Tuesday Tales Coming Up for Air

Ahoy Fellow Fathomers! It's time for Tuesday Tales. A group of writers gather together and give our interpretation of a specific word prompt each week. Once per month, we even write to an image.  You never know what you might encounter when you get inside our minds. This week our group writes to the word- air.    This will be an excerpt f ro m my new WIP for a new romance contemporary, What the Storm Didn't Take. Enjoy!~ Mom’s cookies, Conner’s unwavering loyalty, our friends’ devotion, Garrett’s memorial…that did it. I finally started to cry. Excusing myself quickly for the truck, I needed privacy. The present was a heavy place to be in, the memories- both good and bad were incredibly suffocating. It’s been a year, it doesn’t seem possible. You’ve been gone a year, and I’m carrying this grief around like a fifty pound sack of feed. It’s heavy, so heavy, but, I can’t put it down. I haven’t gotten where I need to be. Why does it f...

Tuesday Tales...Ahh, it's Valentine's Day- Are you in the mood for love?

This week our group writes to the word- love.    This will be an excerpt f ro m my new WIP for a new romance contemporary, What the Storm Didn't Take. Enjoy!~ When I was younger, I couldn’t wait to fall in love. Love as I saw in the movies or on TV, you know a devilish, yet compassionate rogue who couldn’t get enough of me. His soft side always glistening in wait just below a steel surface exterior. To most folks he’d appear as a warrior, or maybe a scoundrel biker, gritty, his heart lined with sandpaper. I’d know the truth. That was my husband, the hopeless romantic who made me believe men were kind and compassionate, as well as rugged and protective. He broug...
